This is about the game where Ronny Deila showed he could handle much more than being just a defender.
We’re back in 2004, and ODD hosted Molde. The first sixty minutes had been boring, except from Moldes only goal, scored py Stig Arild Råket early in the first half. All of a sudden, a Molde attacker broke through, and faced goalkeeper Morten Olsen, who rushed out of the box. Unluckily for him, in a desperate attempt to get the ball away, he hit his opponent. A clear red card for ODDs reserve goalie. And since there was no keepers on the bench, a outfield player had to take the responsibility.
That’s where Ronny Deila comes in. And he took the box as he owned it. Even though Molde was poor this evening, they came nowhere near tricking out «the new guy». He timed his actions well, and quickly started counter attacks by throwing the ball out to the backs. He took a major part in sealing a draw this day, even in a new and unknown position.
After the game he said this: «It wasn’t in my mind that I was going to guard the goal. Even not when Morten hit that Molde player. Suddenly a light turned on for me. Who will be the goalie? I was quite shaky, I must admit. And it didn’t help that my knee was hurting. I should have been subbed out, but I didn’t want to. The worst thing was when Molde had the ball on the outside of the box. I saw nothing, and was frightened to do a mistake».
