So this is it. My passion in life is the magnificent football(soccer) club ODD Grenland from Norway, and it’s that I’m gonna tell you about.
You might have heard about the insanely long-ranged header from Jone Samuelsen last autumn, who will be in the Guinnes Book Of Record next year. Not heard of it? Here is a video of it! The ball travelled 58,13 metres before it reached the goal. It’s one of the craziest goals you’ll see in a long, long time.
About the club
The club was founded in 1894, making it the oldest still existing football club in Norway. ODD Grenland is also the holder of 12 national cups, more than anyone else. Most of them was won early in the 20th century, though the last success came in 2000. They attended the first Norwegian cup final, back in 1902, but lost. Tried again in 1903, and won. since then the club has been the most-winning cup team in over 100 years! The club was also the first to sign a foreign manager (Scottish George F. Murray), and to play an international opponent (Glasgow Rangers, Banks of Dee and a couple other Scottish teams. results unknown).
When it comes to the league, it has been up and down over the years. ODD attended the top division untill 1967, but then dropped down to the backyard of Norwegian football. The team failed to mirror the glorious past, and that shadoved the club for over three decades. At certain times they were close to promotion for the top division, but they simply werent good enough in the deciding moments. But all bad things have to come to an end, and finally, in 1998 promotion were gained, and ODD was back where they belong. Since then the club has been finding itself om mid-table and upwards, exept for the three 2006-08-season, where they relegated in 2007, but promoted next season.
Nowadays the side is very optimistic, since they have done well with a young team. last year, the best eleven counted seven Norwegian internationals (seniors, under 23, 21 and 19). Especially players like Torgeir Børven(20), André Hansen(22), Elbashan Rashani (18), Emil Jonassen (18), Fredrik Semb Berge (20), Herolind Shala, Aleksandar Corovic and George White is are looking forward for a bright and shining future.
Coach Dag-Eilev Fagermo has done very well even with a small budget, he has an eye for cheap but good players.
ODD is, if they can keep hold of their best players, a club to keep an eye on, both on a national and international stage!
I’m looking forward to the new season, and says to you the same as a well-known Norwegian commentator said a few days ago: It’s gonna be a lot of fun in Skien(the home town) this year!
Just a tip in the end: If you’re playing Football Manager, check the ODD Grenland players…
